Copy of Insight From Today's Locum Tenens Physicians 92 Years Since Doctor's Day Was Born (Part 2)

Writer: Mike GianasMike Gianas

Who is better to interview on National Doctors’ Day than the doctors?  So, we did. Here’s the second installment from Katie Roeder, VeloSource Recruitment Manager & Team Lead, who recently spent time with Dr. Lori Borella M.D.

How did you choose your specialty?

Honestly,  it chose me.  I was planning to be a surgeon until the 23rd hour and as a support for that career I chose to do an elective rotation in anesthesiology. One of my attending physicians said to me that I should consider anesthesiology, and I just said “OK!“ anesthesiology had everything I loved about medicine without the aspects that I was worried I wouldn’t enjoy.

What advice would you give young adults with aspirations to become doctors?  If I could do it over again, I would’ve gotten my Bachelor of Science in Nursing as an undergraduate degree. Nursing is an amazing profession because there are so many different ways to be a nurse, and you can reinvent yourself several times throughout a career. It would’ve been a great backup plan in case I decided medicine wasn’t for me. In addition to giving you an insider's look at healthcare.

Throughout your lifetime, you have been surrounded by physicians from your education to your current peers.  What has been the greatest impact another doctor has had on your life?  It’s a tie.  Dr. Jeanne Fitzpatrick, a recently retired family medicine and emergency room physician. Dr. Fitz could balance strength, compassion, and respect better than anyone I ever met.  Guesly Dessieux DO, another family medicine specialist, is the other inspiring physician. His dedication to service to those who need it most is something we should all aspire to.

What is the biggest compliment you’ve received highlighting your work or patient care?  For me, the greatest compliment is being asked to take care of a fellow healthcare worker or their family. There is no higher honor.

What advice would you give a doctor considering locum tenens?  Think about what is most important to you as a person and design your career around that core. I ended up deciding that flexibility in my career would allow me to live the life I wanted with my family. It is difficult at times to be away from them, but when I’m home, I am more fully present than I ever was with a “regular job.”   Also, be open to change.  At some points in your life, a more structured job may suit you at others, locums.

Thank you to Dr. Lori Borella, M.D. We appreciate you! Happy Doctor's Day. And thanks to Katie Roeder for facilitating this interview!
