Insight From Today's Locum Tenens Physicians 92 Years Since Doctor's Day Was Born (Part 1)

Writer: Mike GianasMike Gianas

Who is better to interview on National Doctors’ Day than the doctors?  So, we did. Here’s the first installment from Amanda Everingham, VeloSource Physician Recruiter.

Tell us about your story and how you decided to become a physician.

At the early age of 8, I stumbled upon the largest book in my school library. It was a medical book with detailed photographic illustrations of a surgical procedure. I was intrigued and determined to be a physician from that moment onwards.

How did you choose your specialty?

I chose Obstetrics and Gynecology as it allows me to be involved in the miracle of childbirth, optimize women’s health while providing opportunities for surgical and medical practice.

What advice would you give young adults with aspirations to become doctors?

Visualize your goals, embrace the challenges that come along with the journey, and make your dreams and aspirations a reality.

Throughout your lifetime, you have been surrounded by physicians from your education to your current peers. What has been the greatest impact another doctor has had on your life?

I have been surrounded by many great providers in my career, one of whom said, “Patients always have choices in healthcare. We as physicians must take it as a privilege and an honor that they entrust us with their care and the care of their loved ones. With that, we are duty-bound to be patient advocates!” These words still resonate with me to this day and influence how I practice.

What is the biggest compliment you’ve received highlighting your work or patient care?

The best compliment I’ve received was being told that I was “ compassionate, knowledgeable, and provided exceptional care, “ as I received a Regional award for my work in medicine.

What advice would you give a doctor considering locum tenens?

Working as a locum allows for the closest semblance to the highly coveted work-life balance. It provides a sense of independence, schedule flexibility, and the ability to work in diverse work environments, all while putting an end to the monotony of the status quo.

Thanks to Dr. R.W. for spending time with us last week. We appreciate everything you do for our community. Happy Doctor's Day. And great job Amanda! Thank you both.
